At WorldTour speeds, aerodynamics often trump lightness, especially when the top-level bikes need weights added to meet the UCI-mandated minimum weight. Seeking to give Cofidis riders an edge, Look developed the 695 Aerolight.
For 2015, the frameset has been updated. For lighter weight while retaining the same stiffness, Look now deploys 1.5k carbon-fiber cloth to the mix of plies. They've also changed the rear brake. They've added a carbon brace under the chain stays, installed direct mount posts, and mounted a Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 brake. The brake is sleek, low in drag, easy to operate, and possess both modulation and power on par with the convention Dura-Ace 9000 brakes.
Look wanted to tweak the 695 Light to be more aero, so they turned to a F1 engineer for help. The result is a bike that's 3% faster, possesses more powerful braking, and has only a minor weight penalty. Thank small touches, like a carbon-fiber bottom bracket, carbon-fiber dropouts and fork tips, and continuous fiber plies for keeping the weight down while maintaining stiffness.
It's faster thanks to shaping and integration (the I of I-Pack). The fork, the HSC7, has integrated brakes. These aren't hiding on the back of the fork or under a shroud, but in the fork legs themselves, and the cable comes in at the stem and runs inside the steerer tube en route to the calipers. The rear brakes are hiding under the bottom bracket and made by TRP. The seat stays are wider, to improve airflow as it passes the seat tube and goes past the rear wheel. The brakes are 20% more powerful in addition to being hidden from the wind.
Integration is just about everywhere. The Zed 2 integrated crank is a one-piece carbon fiber masterpiece comprising both arms and the bottom bracket spindle. Weight is a mere 320g. It has a 65mm axle, making this a BB65 bike. And the arms, thanks to the Trilob pedal inserts are a 170, 172.5, and 175mm crankarm in one. Just push out the threaded nut, turn it, push it back in. It works with both 130mm (standard) and 110mm (compact) bolt circle diameter chain rings.
The E-Post is an integrated seat mast unlike any other. E is for elastomer, and there are three densities of elastomer you can insert to help isolate your saddle from road vibrations. You can pull them out if you like feeling the road. The post also has 3cm of vertical adjustment, lest you change your saddle or position. The clamp's setback can be adjusted from zero to 20mm. And, you can attach an internal Shimano Di2 battery to it.
The Aerostem is the final piece of integration. It sits atop the headset to keep things aero and stiff, but can have its angle adjusted from ?13 degrees to +17 degrees. The bars are fixed to the bars via a band clamp for greater contact and security. Stems are sized with the frame, but can be changed. They sit atop a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 1/2" steerer and a bulky crown that make sure the front wheel goes where you want it to with no lateral wobble.
The ride is what many call a "Grand Tour" geometry. Efficient, stable, predictable, comfortable. The bike is fast without being twitchy, and you can ride long hours every day on it. In fact, this bike should ride the same as their 695 Light, as one of their design mandates was to keep the ride quality the same, even with the aero changes. And, as the aero includes internal cable routing for any electronic or mechanical system, you'll have few cables out there shaving off your aero gains.
The Look 695 Aerolight I-Pack is the WorldTour race bike that takes integration to another level.
